Special Issue: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and New Horizons in Language Education
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into everyday life and educational practices has profoundly transformed the field of language education. In particular, the widespread adoption of large language model-based chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) has introduced unprecedented possibilities: personalized learning pathways, instantaneous feedback, adaptive content generation, and enhanced multilingual interaction. While these advancements open exciting new horizons, they also raise critical questions regarding the evolving role of language teachers, the reliability of AI-driven assessment, ethical implications, and the risk of widening digital divides.
This special issue aims to explore the multifaceted impact of AI on language teaching and learning from an interdisciplinary perspective. It welcomes contributions that investigate both the theoretical underpinnings and practical implementations of AI across a broad spectrum—from multilingualism and heritage language education to inclusive practices, early literacy support, task-based learning with chatbots, teacher AI literacy, and the potentials and limitations of automated writing and speech evaluation systems.
